This program offers high school students a rare opportunity to engage in authentic STEM education research with university faculty and present their findings at a symposium.
The PERI Institute STEM Education Research Program offers high school students a unique six-week opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research aimed at improving STEM teaching and learning. Scholars work closely with UCI faculty and staff on hands-on research projects, developing essential skills in identifying problem statements, formulating research questions, and collecting and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data. The program culminates in a research poster symposium where students articulate and present their findings to family, friends, and the UCI community, gaining valuable experience in structuring research posters and delivering presentations. Beyond research, the program fosters communication and teamwork skills, expands academic networks, and provides insights into how research is conducted, preparing students for future academic and professional endeavors.
During the first week, students attend an in-person research camp at UCI from 10 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday. For the subsequent four weeks, students work remotely on collaborative hands-on research, dedicating no more than 15 hours per week. The final week culminates in an in-person research poster symposium.
The ideal student is a high schooler interested in understanding the research process and contributing to improvements in STEM education.
