About this camp

High school students participate in a two-week immersive STEM camp hosted by the UC Irvine Samueli School of Engineering in partnership with Franklin Academy. Students choose between two hands-on projects: building an Autonomous Rover or a Lab-on-a-Chip device. For the Autonomous Rover project, students design, build, and program a robot to navigate a track, follow a line, and recognize/retrieve objects, gaining skills in autonomous driving, IR sensing, and color recognition. The Lab-on-a-Chip project involves designing, building, and testing a microfluidic device to detect fluorescein solution concentrations, a method used in dry eye disease detection. Both projects provide practical experience in CAD design (Onshape), circuitry, sensors, programming (Arduino IDE), advanced manufacturing (3D printing, laser cutting), and the engineering design process. The program also includes professional development workshops on topics like project management, machine learning/AI, UC application, and engineering career paths, along with tours of UCI labs and facilities.

What a typical day looks like

Students engage in hands-on activities, working in UCI engineering labs to design, build, and program autonomous rovers, with instruction from UCI faculty and graduate mentors.

Best suited for

This camp is ideal for high school students (grades 10-12) serious about engineering, AI, and robotics, who want to build applied, physical robotics and gain early exposure to STEM careers.
