This STEM.org accredited program provides a unique blend of visual programming and specialized AI tools, allowing young campers to build and host their own intelligent chatbot projects while engaging in discussions about AI ethics.
In the Club SciKidz Orange County - Jr. AI and Chat Bot camp, elementary and middle school students delve into the foundational concepts of Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Utilizing visual programming environments like Scratch and specialized AI training tools, campers gain hands-on experience in teaching computers to recognize patterns and language. The curriculum focuses on the "Three Steps of ML": Collecting Data, Training a Model, and Testing, allowing students to observe how computers learn to differentiate between images, text, and sounds. Campers will design and build their own personalized chatbots using block-based coding, programming decision trees and algorithms to enable their bots to engage in conversations, answer questions, and even tell jokes. The program also incorporates critical discussions on AI ethics, covering topics such as algorithmic bias and the importance of responsible AI usage. Students will explore Natural Language Processing (NLP), understanding how computers interpret human speech into actionable code. Each participant will leave with a hosted chatbot project that they can continue to develop and share.
A typical day includes general check-in, an all-camp science demonstration, multiple S.T.E.A.M rotations, snack breaks, lunch/recess, games, and outdoor team-building activities, concluding with clean-up and camper pickup.
This camp is best for curious elementary and middle school students (ages 9-11) eager to explore the fundamentals of AI and machine learning through hands-on projects and creative coding.
