The UCI Autonomous Driving Summer Camp, hosted by Franklin Education Foundation in collaboration with UCI's Samueli School of Engineering, offers high school students a hands-on, immersive experience in autonomous driving, AI programming, and mechanical engineering. Adapted from an upper-division UCI engineering course, this two-week program allows students to design, build, and program autonomous rovers in UCI's engineering labs. Participants gain practical skills in robotics programming using Arduino microcontrollers, enabling real-time decision-making and autonomous navigation. They also explore the fundamentals of self-driving technology, including infrared sensors, object recognition, and automation algorithms. Students learn 3D modeling with Onshape and apply engineering principles to design and build rover components, integrating mechanical design, electrical circuitry, and computer engineering. The camp emphasizes iterative testing, tuning, and optimization, mirroring real-world engineering processes. Students leave with a portfolio-ready autonomous vehicle project and foundational experience in robotics and AI.
